Chocolate bark is the perfect healthy dessert to keep in your fridge! The flavor combinations are endless and I'm here to show you some of my favorites.
I mean who doesn't love a big slab of chocolate??
Making your own homemade chocolate bark is so much easier than you think! It's as simple as melting chocolate and adding your favorite toppings such as nuts, fruits and nut butter.
It's then set in the freezer as one large slab which you can then cut into small or larger pieces. Totally up to you, I’m not here to judge how big the pieces are 🙂
It makes them great for meal prep as you prepare a big batch and they’re ready to eat when you feel like it. Another healthy treat to keep in the freezer is Chocolate Dates, which are also great for those sweet cravings.
Chocolate bark is not only great for you but it also makes the perfect homemade gift! Make a batch and gift wrap to share with your family and friends, especially over the holidays.
Below I have three chocolate bark recipes - hazelnut bark which is like a healthy ferrero rocher, a healthy snickers bark, and a Persian-inspired bark.
If you're like me and always need something sweet after dinner, then you will love this recipe!

Ingredients and Toppings
- Chocolate is of course needed! Now I love using a block of 85% dark chocolate but you can totally mix this up with your preferred chocolate. Milk chocolate or even white chocolate can also be used along with chocolate chips or chocolate melts
- Nuts are my favorite thing to add in chocolate bark for some crunch and I also love the combination of chocolate and nuts together. It's also a healthy addition with healthy fats and protein. I’ve used hazelnuts along with peanuts for the recipes noted here. You can also use almonds to make chocolate almond bark, pecans, pistachios or even cashews and walnuts
- Flakey salt is not a necessity but I do recommend it. A little sprinkle of salt gives that salty and sweet vibe and it also brings the sweetness out, but it's optional
- Dates are another yummy addition. They’re sweet and chewy and they give it a caramel flavor without needing to add any additional sugar
- Fruits can be added for some freshness. You can add fresh fruits such as blueberries or other berries. Dried fruits such as cranberries and raisins are so yummy. A mix of dried fruits and nuts makes a great fruit and nut combination
- Toppings are truly endless!!! You can add coconut flakes, cherries, candy, peppermint, cookies and even biscuits! There are no rules 🙂
How to make Chocolate Bark
Here are my easy steps to make this sweet treat in no time.
- Start by melting chocolate using the double boiler method. Add roughly chopped chocolate (I've used dark 85%) and place in a heat safe bowl over a small saucepan or pot with simmering water to melt
- Stir the chocolate gently with a spatula until it's fully melted and there are no lumps, then take off the heat
- Add your preferred filling (refer to the recipe for flavor options) and stir together until well combined and nicely coated
- Place a baking sheet in a rectangular dish or tin and pour in the chocolate mixture. Flatten the top with a spatula to create a flat even layer
- Add toppings and a sprinkle of flaky salt (refer to recipe card). Place in the freezer to set for an hour, or in the fridge for 2-3 hours
- Once set, place on a chopping board and carefully cut into smaller pieces, and enjoy!
Tips & Tricks
- Use good quality chocolate and ingredients. Trust me it will taste so much better!
- Ensure the chocolate is fully melted without any lumps before adding the other ingredients and toppings
- It's best to line a dish with baking paper or parchment paper for easy clean up. Without this, the chocolate will stick to the dish and it won’t come off nice and smoothly
- I’ve used a dish with a size of 30 x 20 cm. You can use a larger size dish to make a thinner bark, or smaller dish to make it thicker
- Be careful when cutting! If it's over set in the freezer or too hard to cut, leave it out at room temperature until its easier to slice
FAQs
It's made of chocolate that is melted and mixed with nuts, dried fruits, nut butter or a mixture of all. Once set, it's cut into pieces that resemble tree bark
I prefer using the double boiler method to melt chocolate. This is done by placing a heat safe bowl over a small saucepan with simmering water. You then add the chopped chocolate into the bowl, keep on a medium heat and stir with a spatula until chocolate is fully melted
You can also melt the chocolate in the microwave. Firstly, make sure you are using a microwave-safe bowl. Secondly, ensure to melt the chocolate in intervals so that it doesn't burn. Depending on the strength of your microwave, start with 20-30 second intervals, stopping and stirring the chocolate each time until fully melted
