If you're a dip fan like I am, then you need to start making Pita Chips at home. I always have a dip in my fridge - no kidding! I switch them up on a little rotation but my favorites I make on repeat are hummus, cacik yogurt dip and my white bean dip. But, you can't enjoy a dip without something to scoop it up with right? That's when this pita chips recipe comes to the rescue!

Trust me when I say, once you start making homemade pita chips, you won't buy them again. They're crazy easy to make and taste so much better than store-bought chips. They're also much healthier and cheaper too, plus you can enjoy them warm when fresh out of the oven, which is my weakness. There's only one big problem, they're super addictive and when you have one you cant stop! You can even make air-fryer or oven baked pita chips too.

I first started making pita chips when I had leftover stale pita bread, as its a great way to revive them without food waste. These days though, I buy a loaf of pita bread just to make pita chips ☺️. Here I've shared my classic simple seasoning but you can get creative and add any flavor you like. Plus you don't only have to use them as a dipper, you can enjoy them with soups in place of croutons, with protein power bowls and many more - check out my extensive list below.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Pita bread is of course the star ingredient. You can use regular or whole wheat pita bread which has more fiber, or stale pita bread you have laying around
  • Extra virgin olive oil adds crispness along with a beautiful golden color and flavor. You can use an oil spray, brush it over, or even a simple drizzle
  • Oregano and sea salt are classic essentials, I always have in my pantry, plus it tastes great with everything especially Mediterranean flavors. You can however add any dry herbs such as thyme, parsley, or Italian seasoning
  • Seasoning options are endless really. From spices such as smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder or lemon pepper. To a Middle Eastern spice blend such as zaatar, which is made with herbs and sesame seeds, sumac or aleppo pepper or cayenne pepper for spice

How to make Pita Chips

Homemade pita chips are crispy, golden and make the perfect snack for any time of day. Follow my simple steps below (note quantities are listed in the recipe card below)

Pita bread being cut into triangles pieces with scissors

Step 1: Using scissors or a sharp knife, cut the pitas into triangles of roughly the same size

Seasoning and olive oil added to pita chips before being baked

Step 2 (Oven Method): Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the pita triangles on top. Drizzle or spray with olive oil and sprinkle with oregano and salt

Hand mixing seasoning and oil evenly on pita chips

Step 3: Toss with your hands to coat evenly, then spread in a single layer

Step 4: Bake for 5–10 minutes until golden and crispy, watching closely as baking time can vary. Serve with hummus or your favorite dip and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

  • Cut the pitas into even triangles using scissors, a sharp knife or even a pizza cutter
  • Brush lightly with olive oil so they don't become soggy. You can also use an oil spray if easier and toss with your hands
  • Arrange the pita breads in a single layer for even cooking
  • Keep an eye on the pita chips so they don't burn as all ovens and air fryers have different strengths. The time will also depend on the thickness of the pita breads
  • Seasoning options are endless, you can really add what you like depending on what you're serving with it - from dried herbs and spices

Storage Instructions

  • Store leftovers once cooled in airtight containers for up to 5 days at room temperature
  • Reheat in the oven or air fryer for a few minutes to revive their crisp
  • Freeze uncooked pita triangles in a freezer bag once seasoned, then bake straight from frozen

FAQs

Are pita chips healthy?

They can be, but this depends on how they are made of course. Many store bought pita chips are high in sodium, preservatives and are usually fried. However homemade baked pita chips are a much healthier option and a great replacement of regular chips

What goes well on pita chips?

Pita chips are a great vessel to scoop up dips and even great with soups instead of croutons. I also love them on salads for crunch - refer to my extensive list above for suggestions

How do you turn pitas into chips?

Simply by slicing pita bread into triangles, add seasoning and baking in the oven or air-fryer

How to make pita chips in air fryer?

Use my same recipe instructions, then air fry for 3-6 minutes at 400℉ / 200℃, tossing half way. Ensure to keep an eye on them so they don't burn

Ingredients

  • 2 pita breads - regular, whole-wheat or even stale pita bread
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano - or other herbs / spices of choice
  • Good pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Using scissors or a knife, slice the pitas into triangles roughly the same size
*Optional - if you are using thicker pita bread or if they have a seam in the middle, split them in half using your fingers before slicing so you'll have 4 round pieces

Oven Method

  • Preheat oven to 400℉ / 200℃. Add a piece of parchment paper to a baking sheet and place the pita triangles on top. Drizzle or brush over the olive oil (you can even use an oil spray) and sprinkle over the oregano and a good pinch of salt
  • Toss the pita triangles so they're all coated - I find it easier to use my hands. Then spread them out into a single layer
  • Bake in the oven for 5-10 minutes until they're golden and crispy. Make sure to keep an eye on them as depending on the bread thickness and your oven, the time will slightly differ
Serve with your favorite dip such as hummus or tzatziki and enjoy!

Air Fryer Method

  • Preheat air fryer to 400℉ / 200℃. Place the pita triangles in a bowl and drizzle or brush over the olive oil (you can even use an oil spray), sprinkle over the oregano and a good pinch of salt
  • Toss the pita triangles so they're all coated, I find it easier to use my hands. Then add them to the air fryer basket and spread them out into a single layer
  • Air fry for 3-6 minutes until golden brown and crispy - tossing half way. Make sure to keep an eye on them as depending on the bread thickness, the time will slightly differ
Serve them with your favorite dip such as hummus or tzatziki and enjoy!
