Ingredients and Substitutions
- Basmati Rice is of course the star of the show! It's a long-grain white rice which turns so fluffy and flavorful when cooked. I always prefer to purchase a good quality rice brand, usually which originated in India, Bangladesh or Pakistan, as I find them the most fragrant and delicious. You can substitute with another long-grain rice like jasmine rice, but the texture may be slightly different
- Salt enhances the natural flavor of the rice
- *Optional to add whole spices to your basmati rice such as cloves, cardamom pods, cinnamon, or cumin seeds. I love adding saffron to make the most delicious saffron rice - you only need a small pinch and it works wonders. Its also popular to add butter or oil for more flavor, but its not mandatory

- Reheat leftover rice gently in a saucepan over low heat with a splash of water until heated through. You can also reheat in the microwave
- To freeze, allow the rice to cool completely, then store it in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating
FAQs
The perfect ratio for cooking basmati rice is 1:1.5 rice to water. So for 1 cup of rice, use 1.5 cups of water
Soaking isn't necessary, however it can reduce the cooking time slightly. If you wish to soak it, soak in cold water for 30 minutes then drain. When cooking, check the rice at 12 minutes to ensure it doesn't overcook
Here I've used the simple absorption method which is fast and effective with perfect fluffy rice every time. I also often cook it differently when making Persian rice with crispy tahdig. This has a double cooking method involving draining the rice for a different outcome

You need to look at what you listed as cook time and total time at the top, because those do not add up to what is in the directions.
